sweet, this is actually exactly the type of thread i just came in here to look for. keep up the progression pics and post again when you have a few more. thanks.

Can anyone explain the different growth pattern? The piece started out flat and is now curving. I only ask because mine have done the exact same thing and I thought it might have to do with insufficient light.

Is your frag mounted to a back wall or overflow box ? And do people glue frags to back wall or overflow box? what about zoes or polys ? Dont know its the newbe in me :rolleye1: :rolleye1:

Great growth

Some people glue frags to the walls or overflow box, I'm sure a person could glue palys as well although I don't know how well they would do like that. I've mostly seen people glue caps.

The original piece was from a mature colony, I suspect as the new growth areas mature they will take on the same appearance. Light, flow, and genetics all play a role in how any single coral will grow. It is mounted to my overflow I'm hoping it will form a strong anough attachment so that it doesnt break away as it gets heavier. Thanks for the compliments, I'm really happy with it, its my first real success with sps and almost growing fast enough to watch it grow.

I like how it's on the glass. I got a cool purple cap growing right now and it differs in growth from my other caps.

That is very cool. Thanks for posting the pics!

I just added a few purple cap frags two weeks ago.

While I'm not seeing growth quite like what you have, I do have some good growth from it. I think part of the problem is that I am using a few of the crappy Current USA tubes that my light came with (= low par)

I think the growth pattern on monti caps is largely dependant on flow. I dont know what flow causes what growth, but I understand you can frag one monti cap, put 1/2 in a high flow and 1/2 in a low flow and get very different growth patterns with each.

Good growth! I've got a red cap that is growing very fast like that. I've got a purple cap frag that doesn't seem to be growing at all.

My purple cap had almost no growth for about two months, then grew like a weed... They take a little while to get started. Red cap grew right away just like you are experiencing. It will grow, just give it time.

Its diameter is increasing by about an inch each month. This one grew well from the very start. I got it in November and in the first pic you can see its already attached and encrusted a bit.

looks good--I wondered what the thin protrusions werer going to turn into (stems or plate out)--they plated out; careful what you wish for with that red cap....
