Purpose of auto-shutoff valve on RO/DI?

Is the purpose of the auto shutoff valve just so you can have a shutoff valve at the outlet at your hands?

My auto valve was leaking so I completely bypassed it and put a valve on the source line so I'd have to reach under and turn it on everytime. I don't mind, but would this be bad for the system for some reason?

The ASOV will shut down your RO/DI when you close the outlet valve without having to close the inlet valve. Basically it allows you to keep the inlet open all the time, unless you are disassembling things for maintenance.

Great that's what I thought, just wanted to make sure putting a valve at the source instead of using the auto valve won't do any harm.
