Putting sand in tank

I just bought everything for my tank and i'm about to mix water and all

do i need to wash the sand before i put it in or just put it in?

I rinsed mine in RO water just to cut back the dust a little. I would rinse it at least once. Either way, you are still going to get a huge dust storm. :)

I would put the sand in the tank, lay a plate on the sand and then add the water. You will minmize the sand storm.

Pat

i would rinse some, but like they said, you will get a huge dust storm regardless. Also some people put a large pipe down into the tank and pour the water in that way to help prevent it from washing the sand around to much.

but, if your getting LR you may want to put that in first, so that it doesn't topple if/when the sand gets moved out from under it ;)

I just started a 90 gallon. I added the substrate and got a cloud storm. It is an unfortunate part of a new tank. If you rinse it first, you run the risk of eliminating bacteria which will cause other problems down the road. I did not rinse the substrate in my 29 gallon either and after several months the water is still crystal clear. It was only cloudy for a couple of days.

actually the best way is to place in your water about 1/2 way or so then take the bag of sand and place on the bottom of your tank...the open end facing down and slowly lift the bag from the sand. very little cloudyness will occure. spread the sand gently with your hand. do this in different locations until the sand is all in then place the rock and the remaining water

I had the worlds worst sand storm in my tank when i started. Someone on here told me to put poly fil (that crap that is in pillows you can get a bag of it cheap at Wal Mart or the Pet Store) in the back of a my hang on filter. I did this and let it run for a couple of hours then un plugged the filter, removed the poly fil, rinsed out filter and repeated. Cleared it up fast.
