Pvc Pipe

what is the reason behind putting pvc in the mantis tank? i know for him to burrow in. but i thought they re-arrange the tank anyway. anybody?

many of the smaller gonodactylids live in pre-formed cavities and holes, although some of the bigger mantis shrimp such as the peacocks can create their own burrows (so some people just give them lots of crushed coral and small rocks,etc)...and of course, many spearers create their own burrows on the substrate. this explains the use of pvc as replacements for these naturally existing cavities.

ahh...ok thanks for clarifying. i have a 10 gallon tank setup with 20 pounds of crushed coral which is about 2-3 inches of substrate. i have 2 hermit crab shells in there with a few pieces of rock. is this an ok setup? or do i need a deeper substrate?

hmmm...i haven't actually used that substrate myself, but so long as it has enough materials to create a sufficiently large burrow for its size, that should be ok. you might want to take a look at the setups at this url....some of those people have used similar substrate:
