Are there any concerns with using standard PVC primer and cement for sump plumbing in regards to chemicals getting into your water?

nope, if you think about it all your household plumbing uses it and its safe to drink water coming from those pipes

I let some of mine cure for about an hour before restarting my new LifeReef sump last Sunday night with all new drains and returns plus a modified return manifold. I didn't see any problems. I would however normally let it cure overnight if I could. The project went awry when the old return manifold and the new drain didn't play nice so I built a simplified version of the entire system. I'd say about half of my 120's plumbing had been glued for an hour before I flipped the switches...

Once it is dry it is completely safe. Just let it dry for as long as you can or rinse with fresh water before you turn it back on.
