Here's one to stir up passions: how many of you quarantine new fish, and how many don't, and why/why not?

Im not a big fan on QTing unless it is a rare fish. Now I only have a 55g and I only have 5 fish and dont plan on adding anything else into it. I usually buy my fish from my store or I get them from that fish place. I really never had a problem with ich or anything else. Once I get my bigger tank running then I will QT everything.

I'm with you. I've never lost a saltwater fish yet, not to stuff it came in with. I'm real careful where I buy, and look the fish over very carefully before I leave the store. I've had a few ich breakouts in a couple of decades of doing this, but nothing I haven't been able to solve. Seems to me saltwater fish come in cleaner; and that a bare tank is productive of stress. Being able to revert to natural behaviors immediately I think has some value.

Examine and make sure you get a healthy fish that's eating in front of you. I supplement my tank with Lugol's for disinfectant properties and healing. Soak the food in a vitamin C solution, and feed 3-5 times a day. I also believe keeping the fish in the tank doesn't stress the fish out as much, thus promoting faster healing from ich attacks.
