Question About My Filtration ???

Hey I own to emporer 400 filters on the back of my 55 gallon aquarium and I was wondering about the Bio-wheels on them, I think I read in another thread that U should take them off of the filter itself because the wheels will create nitrates in your tank from running them on the filter. Should I just take these wheels off or are they ok on my tank ???

Correction:
I own (2) emporer 400 filters on the back of my tank with the bio-wheels running... Should I take off the wheels or leave them on ???
