so i got me an old, drilled, 40 breeder, it was used for curing rock before so it has all this white salt residue on the glass,

what trick u guys do to make glass clear again? or what stuff u guys use?

again, as always thanks in advance :)

and happy weekend

I would put about a gallon of white vinegar in the tank, then fill it about 3/4 of the way full. Toss in a pump or powerhead for circulation and then let it sit for 24 hours. Wipe it off and drain it tomorrow and you'll have a very clean tank.

like soaking it with a lot of vinegar? the white residue is almost all the way to the top. will filling it up with water and vinegar and using a powerhead help?

+1
And do let it sit for a long time like Krash said. White Vinegar will do the trick, but you have to let it go a while if the stuff is really baked on.

Yep, toss a full gallon in and a bunch of RODI to fill it and run the powerhead. Let it go for a day and most stuff will probably flake off, what doesn't you should be able to pretty much wipe away after that.

To get the very top, I usually take one of my smaller fish towels, dip it in the water/vinegar, and lay it over the side of the tank. I slowly move the towel a little along the tank every couple hours and that gets the very top of the tank clean. The smell is strong and everything gets wet so I suggest doing this cleaning on the patio.

Sharp idea on the fish towels, I have layed tanks on their sides and ends and poured vinager on all 4 sides, WHAT A PAIN, THANKS for your post Jay:)

You guys and your vineager..

It takes too long :)

you have a swimming pool in your backyard right?

Get some Pool Acid, Mix up a 5partswater to 1 part Muriatic..

And slosh it around in the tank.

Will each that calcium up in like 2 seconds.. No waiting :)

Always glad to help. The towel method works great when cleaning a tank with overflows since the holes in the bottom prevent actual soaking.

LOL!! Ageed! See my signature... after using muriatic to clean my train wreck of a tank that I bought used, I found it works like a charm. Also took the spots off my driveway! HHAHA  Just wash it REALLY good afterwards.

When your done with the muriatic acid rinse and then take dawn or palmolive dish detergent and wash it like you would dishes! Two fold it softens the highly acidic water with buffering agents and creates a sheeting action when done! The only thing you have to be careful of is the acid can etch your plastic trim if left in contact too long! Enjoy Reg and THX for the shroom in advance!

You put dish detergent in the tank to clean it? I've heard of people having problems when they have cleaned a skimmer or piece of equipment with a normal detergent. Normal soap leaves a residue. Does dawn or palmolive not do that?

That's why I said dawn or palmolive and not Citrus based! Hence the sheeting action! Skimmer wise I use nothing but vinegar as the afformentioned acid would etch the plastic. I could say the same thing : You use acid in your tank? Lol. It's all in the rinsing and with either one u can see the residue in the sun so would rinse until u didn't see it! I've even misted with a sprayer with a water conditioner as a final step to further neutralize!
