quietest pump out there

Hey guys and gals, I am upgrading to a 65 gallon RR tank and am looking for the quietest external pump out there seeing as the tank will be 3 feet from my bed. Any ideas or exact pump names would be great. I have done a lot of research, but I know you guys have pumps I have never heard of. So please let me know about the ones that are silent.

Eheim, hands down. They're expensive, but you get what you pay for. It also depends on how much water you want to move, there are some other ones out there that are quiet as well.

Whatever you do, don't get a mag. IMO, not only are they not quiet, but they are horrible when run externally. I've had several in the last 10 years (one I've been using for around6 years continuously). While they are reliable, they aren't quiet by a stretch. I know many people say they are, but I'm thinking maybe they just haven't heard (or not heard) or really silent running pump. Or...maybe I just got unlucky every single time I got a mag (I've had around 4).

I have been thinking about the blue line velocity series pumps. From what I have read they seem to be the quietest. Can anyone out there vouch for this??

Yeah I have a mag 7 running my 20 gallon sps tank, and its in the sump, and I have no problems with it. But for the 65 I need a larger pump to supply the flow I want.

I have a velocity t3, I've been running it for about two years now.

Impeller is a little funky, so it can get restriced by small debris pretty easily, but it's nothing a clean wont fix.

Biggest drawback is the heat that it puts into the tank, followed by the wattage it requires compared to the amount of water it moves.

However, if silence and reliablity is your biggest concern, you won't be disappointed, It is dead silent and has only given me problems when I faild to clean it or provide a screen on the intake for a month or so.

nolofinwe- On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate this one compared to one of the other blue line pumps? The heat is what concerns me seeing as I will have close to 800 watts of light over this tank already. =)

I'm afraid I can't comment, I've never used any other blueline pump. If you have not had problems with heat before this, then I wouldn't worry about it too much. A small fan directed at the sump will offset the heat put in by the velocity. But if you have had problems keeping your tank cool in the past I would consider a different pump.

The velocity suffers because there is no built-in fan to cool the pump, plus it consumes almost 40% more power than comparable pumps, all that heat dissapates into the water flowing through it

Have a Poseidon T4 on my 180, I'd say it heats it about 1 degree, which isn't a big deal for me. It's by far the quietest pump I've ever seen, but haven't seen the Eheims, so there ya go.

Seriously, the Velocity style pump is so dead silent, you need to put your hand on it to know it's on, and that's not an exaggeration.
