RBTA Splitting!! will be for sale

My RBTA appears to be splitting - it looks like it has 2 feet, but hasn't quite finished splitting the top. I would like to sell the clone if anyone can help me remove it safely from the rock. I have heard about aiming a powerhead at it's foot or holding an ice cube to it to get it to release. Any suggestions? I have a 55g and two of these monsters will take up too much real estate.

This guy was huge before he split (close to a foot when fully extended) so the clone is also of good size.

Those two methods work pretty well. I have also heard people putting a bit of something over it blocking the light. Every day it will move a little to be out from under the object. Then move the object. eventually it will move completely and hopefully onto something you put in like rubble or something like that. If not go with an RO ice cube. They are pretty resilient creatures surpisingly. I would be interested in taking the clone off your hand. let me know how much.

I have taken pics of it, I just have to have hubby dig them up out of the computer. I got it from Rob over 2 years ago and it just kept getting bigger.

Rutlegek, thanks for the advice, I may give that a try. Unfortunately I don't plan on shipping. However, if you are in the area, let me know.

I have used the powerhead method. Blasting at the foot, he will start to move within minutes (at least mine did). Once they start to move you have your opportunity. This means his foot has given up its tight grasp of wherever it was sitting on. Thus you can use your fingernail and get underneath the foot and peal it up a little at a time. It is slow going work but I have take two off rock this way. Just be careful not to squeeze the anemone and don't try to grab its body and pull. During the procedure I found it useful to be repeating "jelly donuts pop badly".

The other way I did it was to use a hammer and chisel. Take the rock out of the tank and set it on the floor. Have someone hold the rock if necessary so that it does not move or rock. Make sure you both are wearing rubber gloves. After careful examination of the anemone and its attachement points, stick the chisel in the right hole and "thwaaack" off pops the anemone on a small piece of rock. Usually a good idea to cover the floor with a double wide layer of towel so that if the anemone hits the floor it is not as bad a bump. If you can find a third helper then you can assign the "catch the anemone when it drop or no supper for you" job.

When using the chisel method recognize that you need only love taps to break the rock. Real reef rock it pretty fragile in this respect. You can often break off a piece just by inserting a screwdriver and applying minimal preasure.

Good luck, it may sound scary but its easy. Kevin

I usually gently massage the foot along the edge (with gloves ) slowly working upwards and as soon as you get underneath a small section its easy to gently massage and pull the rest of the foot off . Im assuming an RO ice cube massage would work pretty well also .

I uploaded a couple of pics to my gallery - two of them were taken in 2004 so it's much smaller than it is now, and the color isn't very true. Another pic is of my GSPs, but the edge of the RBTA is in the pic and that's a better representation of the color. The other pic is actually of my kid, but you can see the RBTA in the tank in the background. As you can tell, I haven't played too much with taking tank pics.

The BTA isn't the only thing that's gotten big. Last time I saw your son, he was just a baby!! :)

Hey Annick - you know how quickly some frags will grow, given the right conditions . . .

Embryoguy, I'm ~50 min North of New Haven, but all bets are off depending upon traffic.

 That I do...that I do!!

If you are looking for actaul physical help I am close. I was wondering how much you were thinking?

Peace,
INK

Leslie,

I am definitely interested in this since rutledge is out. Please let me know when it would be available for pickup. Also, how much light do you have it under?

Thanks,

Mike

Leslie,

Actually INKMAN asked for it before I did. In my first post I just asked for photo's, I didn't express my interest in it. So, in all fairness, INK is next up for it.

Grats INK, it is a great looking nem,

Mike

I was hoping to get $35 for it if it is as big as it looks like might be. I'm still not sure if it has split all the way yet, my clown refuses to budge out of it and the clone is still right next to the original. I'll have get into the tank and get a better look. Thanks for all the great responses.
