So I just ordered one of these...does anyone have any experience with them or own one? According to reviews they seem to be a pretty good camera!

I have one as well ... great camera. Some reviews havent been the best citing the exposure issue (which isnt really an issue) or that the D80 is better in the ergo dept (mind you they never noted that the D80 I.Q. was worse ;) ) ... or the fact that the D80 is 25% more $$

Well, got the camera today...I can't say that I'm happy with it :( Maybe I just haven't toyed with it long enough or I don't know what I'm doing, probably both:D Here are the problems I'm having:
-is there a way to turn off the flash without having to go to a specific mode? My A620 had a flash on/off button
-with the A620 I could get VERY close to the subject and take macro shots, with the XTi I have to be like 3' away...is this my lense?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I've got a 20D and I assume that they're close enough. Mine has a setting on the dial that is no flash. The issue with that setting is that you might have to manually adjust some of the other settings. I've also just covered my flash with the lens cap and shot in Auto mode and gotten decent results. Not the best way to do it, but in a pinch...

Regarding the focusing, it's most likely the lens. Save up and get the 100mm Canon macro lens and you won't be sorry.

Flash is only automatic in program modes. Use Av, Tv or M.

Yes - the kit lens is not great for macro. You can decrease minimum focus distance with an extension tube, or better yet but a macro lens like the 100mm f/2.8

Ok, so what is the exact name/number/"flavor" of macro lens you guys recommend? 100mm f/2.8...is that all I need to know?

I'm looking at the cost and I'm getting very broad answers in terms of price. What should I expect to pay for this lens?

This is one of the default places online to buy stuff. You may find it cheaper elsewhere, but B&H has great reviews:

That lens is also on the current Canon rebate program so you can save a little more. When shopping around check with reseller ratings online. There are a lot of shady dealers out there selling gray market gear. You save a little money (if they actually ship your order) but you can't get rebates or factory warranty service.

Thanks for the input guys :) I always check reseller ratings, I would hate to get jipped! Do you know where I could get some kind of photobox thing so that I can take topdown shots in a tank? I'm not talking waterproof housing, just like an acrylic box or something.

if you turn the dial to 'P' the flash will not pop up. P will do everything auto does without flash.

i saw an arm that connects to a tri pod and holds the camera over an object to take top down shots. that would be great with a camera box.

620's already sold. I've got a boyfriend that works with acrylic a lot, so he'll be building me a top-down box :) I'm getting used to my camera, I think I like it :) I need to get a macro lens, that's next on my list :D
