I currently have a quiet 1 return pump in my sump. This pump is an amazing piece of crap and it only starts about ten % of the time after a power outage. I need something reliable for my sump that will start every time. I am sick and tired of this pump it is worthless and would advise against getting it for anyone in the market for a return pump. Please reccomend something usefull this has become a major problem.

I have a mag pump. Never had a problem with it. they may not be as quiet as some of the more expensive pumps, but for the price I think they are a good dependable pump.

I recommend avoiding anything made by TAAM http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=805790

Many people use Rios such as me. Now that they don't use oil in their pumps they are alot better. The seios pumps they make are very good but of course can't be used for a return pump. I use a rio 1700 as a return pump on my 75 and haven't had any problems or had to quit on me.

I understand that they have changed their pumps. But since this just happened a couple of months ago I doubt that they have changed their policy of not responding to emails. This is awful customer service. I would rather give my business to a company that cares enough about their existing customers to respond to them.

I have a Mag drive return pump. It pumps 500gph flawlessly. It primes on its own after I shut the system down to maintain the sump. It is an in sump model so it does increase the temp a little, but overall it is very reliable.

When my rio return pump finally failed (came w/ system, no crash luckily) I replaced it w/ a Mag 7. I left town for work for 5 weeks and had my Exgirlfriend (now :)) take care of the tank and do water top offs. After coming home and checking the tank over, I realized the sump was DRY, and I don't know for how long...anyways after removing the pump and cleaning it.... the Mag drive started right up w/ no apparent Head loss.

For the price, Mag is going to be hard to beat. JME

Their customer Service seems good to me. I just contacted them about ordering a rio 1100 with a needle wheel since I broke mine and they are going to replace it for me.

Man, so many posts about QO pumps and starting issues. I dont see why people continue to buy them. As others have said, a Mag pump is reliable and low cost. They are far too noisy for my tastes and do poorly in the headloss area. After owning 4 Mag pumps (3/5/7/9.5) I finally got an Eheim 1260. World of difference. Super quiet, doesn't fall flat on its face under head pressure. Reliability is measured in decades. I'll have this pump for a long time.
