Red bug treatment POLL

I am trying to figure out the correct water ammount I have in my tank for dosing formlation.
Is there a approximate rock weight displacement of water volume?
I'm sure this would make it too easy. but before reinventing the wheel I thought I would ask
I have a 110 gallon tank with a 40 sump and about 120 lbs of live rock and about 200 Lbs of Southdown in the DSB.
If I am correct I think I remember putting 140 galons of water in but I think that was before I put the rock in and I had to remove some as I did that. I don't remember howe much.
I wrote down how much I put in but forgot to write the amount I took out.
How do you guesstamate your volume?

Bump for Toddah and myself. Looking for the same info. The only thing I can come up with is that dolmite is about 2.8specific gravity vs water(fresh) so 100 lbs of rock would be 280lbs of water, water is about 8 lbs per gal. so that would be about 35 gallons of water.

The problem is dolmite is not the same specific gravity of live rock of course, I'll assume its less, so if some one knows the specific gravity of live rock.
We could figure it out I think? Or maybe not?

Just wanted to add I have just foud limestome avg. about 1.5 sp. gravity. So 100lbs of live rock would be about 150 lbs of water 150/8 = 18.75 gallons which sound close? Maybe?

Just to give some information .
I treat my tank including my live rock displacement and did not work the bugs came back.
The last two times and the ones that kill all the bugs for good i did not use the sand or the live rock displacement i had a total water volume of 265 Gallons of water that was 200G tank and 65G sump.

Where do I get this stuff from? Will my local Vet carry it? If so what do I ask for. I understand it is made for dogs?? Where do I get the usage directions. Thanks

I'm doing my 3rd treatment this Sunday. So far everyhting is good. There is a big difference in my corals.

I did, went through more than a bucket of salt on my two tanks. That's the worst part of the whole thing.

I nominate Dustin Reefer of the year.
Just yesterday I did my first of the 3 treatments. It worked wonderfully. Not a red bug to be seen. And surprisingly so I didn't lose any of my Acro crabs.

Also I want to make a note and say that I used the brown pills (2-10lb dog). I calculated my tank to have appx 80gal. of water volume. Dustin makes mention one large pill 50-100lb dog treats appx 380gal. w/ 23mg of MO. Therefore 1mg treats appx. 16.52gal.
The small Interceptor pills have 2.3mg of MO. Which yeilds about 37.99 gallons of strength so I used 2 pills and so far it has worked out perfectly. Like I said all Redbugs appear to be gone and I didn't lose an Acro crab. I couldn't be happier.

What about dipping new additions to the tank? I want to prevent them from comming back a 3rd time!!
I've heard that people are using Seachem's Reef Dip and other Iodine based solutions for new corals- Does Iodine really work on the bugs in this application?? I thought not.
Anybody with any experiance on iodine dipping as a removal method for new additions? Or, should one stick to interceptor dips only.
BTW, for any of you sitting on the fence, you won't be sorry in the long run- the corals really look great and grow well right after treating- it's too bad about the acro crabs etc, but I'm sure that if I hadn't treated, I'd have lost whole colonies eventually.

I'm so happy I have to say it again also. If you are waiting to do the Interceptor DONT WAIT! DO IT NOW it works and works well.

Even better I didn't lose any of my 3 Acro crabs and I still have my pepermint shrimp too. Pod population is slightly less though.

And of couse not one red bug.

And increadible polyp extnsion. The corals must of starving all this time.

Reefmutt, you can use interceptor for your dips too. I use a 40 gallon tank and do 1 6hr treatment per day for 3 days. A lot of people are just doing a single 6hr dip on incoming corals.


Neo-Ta, I would keep an eye out for bugs. Acro crabs are much more sensitive to it than the bugs are. I only had 1 out of hundreds of peppermints survive. If your treatment was weak enough to not kill those guys, you might not have gotten all the bugs. You may have gotten them all, just keep your eyes peeled. If they show up again, increase the dosage slightly.

After my first treatment: wiped out any acro crabs and hermits I couldn't catch - within the first hour. My cleaner shrimp are unaffected. Red bugs have also vanished. I'll do another treatment next weekend.

My acro crabs die when i underdose my tank three times i saw no bugs for five weeks after the last treatment.
I was sure i kill them for good, but they came back,when i check my acros after six or seven weeks ,i had to treat the tank again three more times with almost double the original dose now i have no bugs for almost five months.

well I've finished my 3rd treatment- too early to tell if they will or will not come back.
Just an interesting bit of info- all of my acro crabs were killed, obviously, but I have noticed that my xenia crab- that I see once a month, if i'm lucky, has survived!!
after all the death, I'm pretty psyched that it made it.
I will treat all new additions with at least one dose of interceptor from now on..

The dosage used in an aquarium to kill redbugs is 25mg (0.025 grams) per 10 gallons of actual tank water . That is 25mg of the entire tablet. Each tablet in the pack of 6 will treat about 380 gallons. The tablets are ground with a mortar and pestle into a fine powder.


My wife and are confused. I have a pack of 6 at 23mg. One sentence above says 1 tablet of 23mg treats 380 , and other sentence says 25mg for 10gallons.

Can someone help me here. I have a 110g tank with 20g sump/half full and 150lbs of rock.
