reef safe...

Quick question for your ceph experts.....

I have a 72 gallon tank with 100 pds of LR cycling now for about 2 weeks...I plan to make it into a reef/fish tank eventually.

I have always been fascinated with cephs, my interest in them got me started in the hobby. Also I have noticed a large population of crabs, most of which appear predatorial (small crabs) in/on my live rock. My idea was to purchase a small octo for my eventually reef tank and let him go to town on my crab population. Basically, I was wondering how reef safe an octo is, I planned on adding corals to the tank while the tank is
Octo-occupied :) hee hee
Any imput or advice would be much appricated...

Hi

Apparantly that is quite a common thing to do over here in the UK, especially with big tanks, I think I mentioned this to other members a while back?!

Well, they would take care of your crab problem and any pest shrimps too. BUT they come with their own problems that can only be solved by making your tank octopus friendly...

Obviously, you cannot add any fish or shrimps you WANT to live while the octo is in there

The octo may try to climb out so you will need a tight fitting lid. Not always suitable due to the lights on a reef tank.

Any pipes/hoses/filters/skimmers etc will need to be octo proof.

They like to redecorate their homes. Moving a coral about is not out of the question. they are very strong.....

those are just a few ideas, off the top of my head, there are many reasons why i think it would be a bad idea...if you read back some of the threads you may come across other reasons.... oh, and some eat hermits and turbo snails so you couldnt add then either!
