Are there any other Reefers in Alaska? just wondering where you shop? from what I have found there is slim pickings.
Also is there a club in AK at all?

Hello,

There are a few of us out here in the Mat-su valley. There are several of us interested in starting a club to get frags trading. Contact me, I am just getting my system setup.

I am david and i work at "the reef" formaly house of critters in anchorage on old seward hwy. i havent been on-line latley, but i will try to keep up on whats going on the web.

I am moving to Fairbanks within the month from Colorado. I have been part of the RMRC (Rocky Mountain Reef Club) and it has been a great experience. I have been joking with the guys here about getting an extreme Northern division going. So I guess that's a good enough reason to tag along.

Hello Misfit6669,
By the time you get up and going, I should have my tank well on the way. Stay in touch, no doubt you'll have to come down this way at some point and we can get some trading of frags done. Also (as I have done) make sure you have a couple of folks where you live now who would be willing to ship you up some good hardy frags. Alaska needs more frags!
Cheers,
Jason

Already got some really good sources here in Colorado so I hope I can get some frags once I get setup, it might take me some time before I do get my tank setup unfortunaly. Look forward to hooking up down the road. What type of prices are out there?
Hermits?
Snail?
Buckets of salt?
LR?
Sand?
Just trying to get a heads up.
Thanks Jason
Brian

Well,
So far I have only found 1 or 2 stores with reasonable prices for livestock, its about the same I was paying for them in MI. Hermits/ snails will run $1-$1.50 each.
Sand is VERY expensive, I think I am going barebottom in my 180g as a direct result, may add a deep sandbed remotely later on.

Salt is $75 a bucket (instant ocean and err forgot name), expensive stuff up here, if you have the means of bringing some up, I would def. do it, esp. if you have a large tank. That btw is the best price, they do get more expensive.

I have yet to see what I term decent liverock for sale yet. The stuff I have seen runs at least $8 a pound. As i did in my previous setup, I make my own rock. Have a 55 gallon full of it curing right now. Best way to go by far for larger setups.

If you have the means, import your own buckets of salt and if you have access to southdown sand, bring some along as well! It the weight that forces the prices soooo high for that stuff.
Cheers,

Jason

Thank you very much Jason, some of the prices are kinda what I was expecting. I made most of my rock last time and think I will do the same again. If we had Southdown here, I would bring it up but it's very hard to get this side of the Mississippi.
Thanks again.

I know this is an old post but It would be awesome to have a Frag Swap sometime. We should think about getting one going,I got a few Zoo's I could frag.

Yo yo there are several of us. :) I'm setting up a new tank in the new house in Eagle River, so I'm out of the swap game for a while. I shop at The Reef (best tank prices and fish selection), Pet Zoo (live rock about $6 per pound for decent Fiji, best sand prices), and Animal House ($75 Instant Ocean and Oceanic, best coral price and selection but get to it weekly it doesn't last long or flourish in their tanks). We have a pretty limited selection overall -- I order my equipment online. PM me if you want I've been reefing up here for a half dozen years. I know of at least a dozen here on RC from AK...

I haven't been to Pet Zoo or The Reef in awhile,I usually go to Animal House.Last week they had some awesome corals but sold quick,I picked up a Frogspawn that died within a day, most likely from me not acclimating them to my MH's  They do have the best prices on Salt mixes.

3S1K -- Pet Zoo sometimes gets really nice Fiji and occassional Tonga, and it's much cheaper than anywhere else. I saw the price marking for the Frogspawn on Saturday at Animal House. :) I try to call them to find out when their stuff comes in and buy it still in the shipping bag -- she'll also special order which is nice since you get first crack and can pass if you don't like the goods. The Reef keeps the best tanks in the area, but the prices reflect that on everything except tanks themselves...

I have bought a few choice pieces in town but bought 44lbs from marine depot for about $150 shipped and a bunch from a buddy of mine for almost $3 per #.I had to take it up since it was so cheap.

Yea that Frogspawn was a little pricey but I wanted it.I learned my lesson about light acclimation though hehe.If they order stuff your not obligated to buy it?

Hey i bought that 5 head frogspawn b4 it was out of the bag for $30.00 (not to bad IMO).. She housed it for a few days for me...lol.. Linda at the animal house usually gets her shipments in on wednesday, but she is getting it on tuesday and wednesday this week.

I saw that one,I wanted it but it was sold already.I think I paid 60bux for mine and it had 4 heads on it.If your willing to frag yours later on let me know:) I don't think there is a club yet.

My tank had a problem after I added it.. Only have 1 head left, and fighting to keep it alive.. Everything else is doing fine... He just isn't happy in my tank...

That sux, mine did the same exact thing.I thought 1 was still going to live but on the second day it started to expelle its pigment also and just melted away.I asked on RC and they said my MH's were probably the cause.

Just curious, how did you get the frogspawn so cheap? Was it because it was still in the bag and you made an offer? When I buy stuff its always in the tanks already.
