pictures just got posted.

fish look amazing, but i feel kinda bad for them, i never liked seeing wrases or gobys in tanks that dont have sand in them, i know they wrasses will just bury themselves but they look so stressed.

. Well the wrasses that do bury themselves were in tanks that had sand.
I got myself two irids wrasses(radiant)

A lot of people that own lfs don't put the wrasses in a sand bottom tank because many times the fish won't come back out and you're supposed to force transhipped fish to stay awake so they go to sleep when your lights go off.

and this is ok just so they can sell them?? NO!! If I went to a store and saw a fish that burrys itself in the sand in a BB tank...I wouldnt buy the fish or anything from that store for that fact. Thats cruel! Just shows you that the LFS is out to make a buck rather then care for the fish....

its just like us with jet lag, the fish will get use to the new time cycle, it will just take a weeks or so.

and the radiant, divide, and leapord wrasses, plus other in those photos do bury them selves when stressed. many of them wont do it on a consistent basis, for instance i have a flasher wrasse that just sleeps in the rock in his mucus cocoon. but when i first bought him, right under the sand.

ive had quite a bit of experience working at LFS and know that almost all med. to small. wrasses will bury themselves or want to hide after transhipping.

i am aware that its harder to sell them that way, but instead your putting a fish in a crowded, unnatural environment with no where to hide, and he isnt even on the same time schedule. can you imagine being thrown into a empty room with 20 people, with a opposite lighting schedule???

i think you might be just a lil freaked out.

I'm not saying its a nice practice, but plenty of people do it. Their rational is that its hard to sell a fish thats in the sand.

I have all my wrasses BB tanks. They really don't need the sandbed as long as you give them rocks and stuff to hide under. I've kept several of my wrasses for years now in a bb, but there are lots of corals and stuff to hide under.
If I had a store I would not have a sandbed and would just put rocks and pipes for them to hide in. Its not good to be kicking up the sandbed everytime you go to hunt for a fish you're selling.

I don't think its healthy to overpack fish in tanks the way a lot of lfs do because it stresses the fish out and ich spreads much easier this way. I think you lose a lot more fish this way too.

yes i agree. they dont need it to be kept sucessfully. and your right pipes, rockwork or other objects would suffice, i just felt bad they were stuck out in the open like they were and so over crowded

ive been to reefs edge and met with mark and katie, i think they are both great people and have a nice store. and i know they dont have a whole lot of room for fish and are just working with what they have.

ditto

Just went to Reefs edge and got an african leapord wrasse. They have all the wrasses that needs to hide in the sand...in the tank with sands. They had to dig into the sand to get them out. They all look good.

i got a divided/leopard wrasse as well, i have yet to see him though, since i put him in...
How bout you kewlworm?? Do you see yours?? Mine doesnt come out to eat with the rest of my fish, i know they like pods though

I just put him in and he was staying out in the same place on the sand for like 2 minutes then he started looking around the corner and...swoosh...into the sand. The lights are out right now. Hopefully I will see him tomorrow.

lol i saw mine for 20 seconds when i put him in, and haven't since since saturday, hope he's ok. Just wondering, how much did you guys pay for your wrasses? $35 here for a leopard female, well 35.99. I dont get the extra .99 :(

Patience!
Anyways I have tons of competition in terms of wrasses so get two of each so one can be harrassed and one can survive.
Keeping my fingers crossed-

I hope you really don't do that. Don't you think that's a little rough on the one fish?
