Refugium / Water color issues???

I am thinking about setting up a refugium to have some macroalgea and a deep sand bed to help with nitrates, but I heard from a reputable pet store that some times the water gets a bit of a yellow tint because of the alge growth in the refugium?? Has anybody else heard this , or have experience or an opinion on this???

Welcome- there might be a connection in that when macroalgae reaches a certain stage, it essentially disintegrates into a messy blob, releasing undesirable elements in the water. This is easily avoided by trimming/harvesting the algae periodically, which is the whole point in keeping it- the algae removes pollution from the water, then you remove large chunks of the algae. Many find it a great way to help their tanks- good luck.

It is possible for your water to turn a yellowish tint over time. It may or may not be caused by macroalgae, but I've heard there is a higher chance when you have more. A simple solution is to run carbon on your system. This will clear the water color up in short order.

Good Luck!

actualy cuelrpa and cheato will couse yellow tinting in the tank water
however it is nothing you cant get rid of using activated carbon
having a skimmer also helps
i have 2 types of ceulerpa and cheato in my tank and have no problems with tinting the water
my skimmer get all the green stuff out before it does anything
