Remora Pro Hang-On Skimmer

Hello all!!!

I am "New to the Hobby" as I only set up my 65-gallon aquarium two days ago. The local salt-water shop recommended a Remora Pro Hang-on Skimmer for my protein skimmer and I purchased it right away.

I set up my aquarium the first day and it looked great. Empty but great. I did not have any bubbles and the water was as clear as could be.

The next day I added salt until I had salt level of 1.25. This is what the local shop recommended. However my aquarium started to get a lot of bubbles in it.

I don't know how to get rid of the bubbles or how to set the level of my protein skimmer. I keep checking my skimmer to see if the it is producing any waste. However it is always empty. I keep changing the level of the skimmer but it does not help. Is it possible that I just don't have any waist in my aquarium? How do you set the height that the overflow should be set at? Please help the guy that is "New to the Hobby"

I had/have a very similar problem. At first I was getting huge amounts of micro bubbles, but in time, it does begin to die down. I'm not saying it will totally stop (mine hasn't up to now) but mine did get better.
I'm just starting to get a teeny tiny amount of skim at the bottom of the collection funnel - but not massive amounts.

I ran this problem by the folks in the equipment forum and they said I will get better, and produce more skim in time. With it being a new setup there are considerably less waste products to remove. Do you have L/R in your tank?

1.25 is too high, I you want 1.025.
Skimme neds to break in, bubblees r a good thing.

The bubbles will go away in a few days. Keep the skimmer cup as low as it will go. THere is not much waste to skim now, so the cup will not get much. Soon as the fish and snails arrive the skimmer cup will start collecting.

Hi! I installed a Remora Pro a few weeks back on my 55 gal before I set up my sump. My tank had cycled through about 3 weeks or so before I added my skimmer, but it still took a day or two before it started pulling anything out. I started at the lowest setting for the collection cup, i.e. had the rubber O-ring as close to the top of the collection cup as possible. This produced a more watery skimmate, but it seemed to have gotten the skimmer "started" so to speak. I had microbubbles during that first week, which inspired me to put my sump together. Also, the huge Mag 5 sitting in the tank inspired me a bit as well.

My remora pro is now hanging on my sump, and it's skimming well. I've slowly started to move the collection cup up to get a less watery skimmate. If you don't have anything in your tank yet as far as getting it cycled/putting wastes out, etc. I wouldn't expect it to be skimming much out. Adding some LR and whatever ammonia source you will use to cycle will probably help kickstart things. I've been pleased with mine, and my water looks much better since I added my remora pro (and sump).

I put a Remora Pro on my 55 3weeks ago. I also added the skimmer box. The box has two chambers. On for the pump and a second for the return flow. The second chamber has a sponge at the bottom of the cup which is where the water exits through an opening. The box works great, but is HUGE. I will post a picture. As to the settings, I keep adjusting the cup height. Lower seems better. I spoke with my LFS and emailed the manufacturer. Both said to have the bottom of the cup 1 to 1 1/2 inches above the water level in the skimmer. Take a flash light and shine it against the box to see the water level. Foam production is very good. I call it a wet foam and when it settles in the cup, it is a greenish color with some brown coffee like stuff in it. I empty it every few days. I have live rock, a Picasso trigger and a yellow tang. I only had a problem with the bubbles for the first two days.

hey smokie, welcome to the hobby. first thing you should do IMO is remove skimmer and rinse in flowing hot water. this will reduce or stop the micro bubbles. you need some kind of waste to remove before you can remove it. is there LR in the tank? raise the cup just enough that the bubbles enter cup. this will stop watery skimming. the waste is always on top of the bubbles and will flow into cup slowly, it might take a couple of days. be patient, that is the rule of reefing. you cant hurry anything, let it take its course. impatience leads to over adjusting and frustration. good luck & REEF-ON!!!
