Return pump recommendation - high head

I've moved my sump to the basement and as a results I have lost considerable flow from my Mag 12 return pump. Flow is estimated at 360 based on the head loss charts on the home page.

I have been considering a DC pump but poor performance at high head pressure and reliability are causing my reconsideration.

I would like to have at least 100 gph in the display. Head pressure is 8 feet high, 15 feet vertical and 15 90 degree elbows.


What would be a good high volume pump at a reasonable cost?

Each 90 degrees elbow adds 1 ft of head height, so you will need a pump that can push at least 30ft of head

Your best bang for buck will be Blue line/ Panworld pressure pump, I am surprised you are getting any flow at all to the DT with the Mag 12

No they do not. They add equivalent feet of straight pipe. Usually around 4 ft. A properly sized system will have around 5 ft of losses per 100 ft of pipe.

Looks like you need to plan for 15 ft or so. An panworld or Iwaki would be your best options. Not sure what model off the top of my head.

I think I am settling in on the Pan World 200. Any idea how much flow can go through a 1 inch herbie drain, 2 inch combing to a 1.25 drain to the sump? Should I use a gate valve to make sure I don't overflow the dt?

you definitely want a valve to make sure you dont overflow the dt. I have two ball valves, one just past the output on the pump in my basement and one in the stand of the tank upstairs. I control the amount of flow with the basement ball valve, and use the one under the tank upstairs to shut it off when i want to if im feeding the corals or such.
