In all honesty, the bigger problem is products that are made to DUMP on a market. This has become a very common practice. The labels and specs look like the real deal, the product looks like the real deal, the quality however is not even in the same universe.
eBay is one major outlet for this junk, but it is starting to show up everythwere. Flea markets, retail "outlet stores", auctions, online stores.
Lets put it this way, I have a guy who gets me custom length power cords with the ends I specify molded onto the cord. I buy HUBBELL parts because they are an industry standard. However I could have them stamp junk ends on that "look" as good. I could also have a fake UL listing stamped on the cord with the words 12 GAUGE 1800 Volts. When in reality the wire in the cord is the cheapest 28 guage wire that could be found. This stuff happens every day. In our hobby, look at some of the powerheads, air pumps and other complete junk that is sold at 1/20th the value of the name brand stuff. It looks the same, but does not perform the same. Not all discount stuff is junk, but you have to be very warry of what you buy.
