RO unit plumbed off city water or softened water?

I just got a free RO system, I'm planning to add a DI cartridge at some point. Anyway I am also getting a water softener installed tomorrow and was wondering if it was best to run the RO from the city supply or run it off my newly softened tap water?

Running from the water softener will prolong your cartridge life.

Ok that's just the info I was looking for. Can't wait to get it setup. I don't have a marine tank yet but I plan to set one up soon. I want to use the RO water for top ups on my freshwater tanks and to split with my tap water top soften my planted tank water.
