Rum Ok?

I'm almost out of vodka and I have this bottle of Bacardi (no flavorings) that no one seems to like. It's a shame to throw it out if I can give it to the reef instead of vodka.

Is this Ok to do?

"But why's the run gone?!?"

haha. I couldn't see a clear rum w/o flavors being much of an issue. it should be a pure enough spirit like vodka. It just comes from a different source. I could be a little off on my bar info, but vodka, blanco tequilla, clear rum and grain alcohols that haven't been barrel aged should all be safe. They're pure spirits from the still, just made from different sugar sources.

NOW! I don't know exactly what is in all of them from a chemical composition side. They all have ethanol, but there are other organic compoinds present in the different clear spirits that give them their different tastes and smells. If memory serves they're of the ether/esther/ketone nature. I could be way off, but it's worth investigating anyway.

Send the rum to me and I will send you my vodka. I will dose it with Cherry Coke. But seriously, I have dosed both sugar and vodka, seperately, over the years. I had better results with vodka. I would not dose rum in my tank though.

All this talk is making me thirsty.....

Don't dose anything.... Keep up with your water changes and add a large refugium with macro algae....

That's the mystery. I have a fuge, bare bottom tank, top of the line equipment (see sig) and I use GFO/carbon. I only feed once a day one pellet of SF Bay mysis and I've got a algea problem. My skimmer doesn't skim and when it does it's very wet. When I dose vodka the whole story changes and it skims like a big dog pulling out heavy waste. I've carbon limited my system I think. Not sure.

Well...
I have a 300 gallon system with a refugium. Do 50 gallon a week water changes. Have a decent size reactor filled with carbon that I change the 1st of every month and a GFO reactor that gets changed the 1st of every other month and a huge LifeReef protein skimmer. My nitrate reading is 0... OH and I feed at least 2 times a day.

I guess my understanding of vodka dosing as opposed to other spirits was the comparative lack of flavorings and other additives.

I wouldn't dose the rum into my tank because you really don't know what the additives are (and the distiller isn't going to tell you) or their concentrations.

I'd dose the rum into a cold Coke, with a big splash of lime juice. Perfect this time of year.

Plain vodka has had most everything except the ethanol and alcohol removed, so it seems a lot safer to dose than rum, IMO.

I've had good luck with both vodka and vinegar. Some of my corals did not like sugar at all.
