Running a 7200/2 externally?

This may seem a little strange...

I'm trying to come up a way to vary current in a 20G I'm planning, and it would be really cool if I could use a 7200/2 w/controler as the pump for a closed loop.
Can it be run externally, and do you know the dimensions of the input and output pipes?

It isn't really 100% water tight, if you placed it in a sump it could work as a return but the flow is substantially diminished by head pressure.
