Salifert Ca++ Testing Instructions

test kit instructions

Thanks Mihn, . Funny how the little things start to slip away first. Terry

My Salifert kit's instructions call for 4ml of sample in the 5ml syringe and 8 drops of Cal solution #1.

What's with that!!!!!

Mine is the same as Rich's. Habib changed the Ca test sometime recently (within the last year, I think?) Is it possible MD still has the old instructions posted?

Rich - you're right, I just checked my instruction, and it called for 8 drops of Ca-2, but only 2ml of water and not 4ml. The exact instruction I have can also be found at
Marine Depot.

Here's the new instruction on Salifert website .
In my kit, the Ca-1 is the dry EDTA indicator. Ca-2 is the NaOH solution. So my test kit is completely different from Rich's or bsaastad. My test kit batch is 0505-A. I wonder is the 0505 indicates that it was made in May 05? Upate: A thread I read makes me think the batch number is yymm-#. Notices that the first two digit is the year and the second two number indicates the month that your test kit was made.

The one I have is 2mL of sample and 8mL of the hydroxide..
The hydroxide is pretty important to get the Mg to percipitate out. Otherwise the EDTA will react with both Ca and Mg, giveing you a high bias in your testing.

Hey David,

It's be interesting to see what the Ph of the sample is when you add 6 drops of NaOH to 2ml sample of your salt water. My understanding is that if the pH is 11+, then your fine.

I'll try to take some test strips home tonight and see. I'm not sure if I have any narow range strips in that range...so it might be a +/-1pH unit..
