salt level???

On the hydrometer it says the salt level is suposed to be 1.020-1.023 but i have read on other web sites that it should be 1.026??

I keep mine alittle on the high side, 1.025- 1.027 anywhere in their is where I like my tank. I think the ocean itself is like 1.026 or more,

Natural sea water is about 1.030

I thought natural seawater was 1.027. Anyways I keep mine at 1.026 FO tanks can be a lower salinity. Reef tanks are a bit higher

FWIW, According to Randy Holmes-Farley natural seawater is 1.025-1.027

So then Naturall sea water is safe to say around 1.025- 1.027 and If i keep mine at 1.026 then I'm doing just great

Natural Seawater is indeed around 1.025-1.027.

What should you keep yours at?

If it is a Fish Only tank I would keep it around 1.023. This is because it is easier for fish to purge their body of salt at a lower salinity.

If it is a Reef tank I would keep it around 1.026. This is because it is more comfortable for the majority of invertbrates.

That is what I learned while volunteering at The National Aquarium In Baltimore.

I myself keep it at 1.025.

I test is daily.

I think that's about right for the Red Sea. Various places in the ocean have different SG levels, but 1.0265 or so is the canonical "average" that's usually used.

it gets too high as water evaporates. The salt does not evaporate and stays in the tank. Thats why you don't need to add more salt, just clear water.

To lower it, you remove salt water and add fresh water...slowly.

I keep mine between 1.025 and 1.027. Salinity is always check with a refractometer. Those hydrometers are always off a couple of points, some even up to 4, ecspecially if you dont rinse them out after each use.

A great thing to invest into would be a refracto meter they are very accurate if you can get one their not that expensive... somewhere in between $35- $50 I think....
