I would say he is a goner. If you are smart don't replace it, they are voracious eaters and most tanks will not support one. That goes double if you want a functioning deep sand bed, they eat live pods and critters and will decimate a sand bed in no time at all.

What else isn't DSB compatible? I've seen some sites that sell "cleaner kits" that include sand sifting stars.

Most of those cleaner kits are awful, IMO. Too many animals and the wrong animals.

There's a very long list of DSB-incompatible animals. Crabs, hermit crabs, and predator snails are the more commonly-purchased DSB-destructive cleanup crew members, I think.
