It depends on what you want. If you want it to help w/ filtration then atleast 4" depth is needed. If you want it just for asthetics then in needs to be less than 1".
 
if you want DSB, do a remote DSB. I just spent my whole Friday to remove my 4 yrs DSB. It worked perfectly, however, it looked ugly with 5+ inches of sand on my display. I'm still using DSB now, but remotely.
