sandstorms....why let it happen?

why do people still put sand in and then dump in the water?
why not take a little iniative and make it a clean set-up, no waiting for a sandstorm to settle? It is SO easy to do!

how non-informative this thread was.........atleast if you are going to complain, explain the solution to people that did it wrong or may do it wrong.......techniques etc.....

My initial set-up had a minor sandstorm for about 40 minutes:

Mix all needed saltwater 3 days before live rock is due to arrive. Place dsb in empty tank. Build aquascape upon receiving rock shipment, and then add water to tank and sump. Start return pump, and leave poweheads turned off or uninstalled altogether. I began skimming 1 hour after turning on the return pump, and added 2 seio 820's two days later.

lay garbage bags over your sandbed, then place a plate on the garbage bags, next, put a bowl on the plate, then pour your water into the bowl. when tank is about half way full you can remove bags and dishes. did this yesterday, works great.

Oct 2274....i was in no way complaining and your post made this thread more "worthless".......i was triying to find my "no sandstorm: directions thread, but can't find it.

Reefer for life.....has it dead on though;) (except i would put as mant plates as you can fit, without overlapping)

found it.......

** NO Sandstorm set-up

ahhh....to beat the sandstorm this is the best new tank set-up plan(with sand)

after sand placement:
1. rinse garbage bags(but leave closed) and place them on top of sand
2. rinse plates and put on top of bags(making sure you press against corners and front ans side or back panes--pinching the bag to the glass
3. slowly add water on top of one of the plates
4. after about 30%-40% full....take out plates, then bags.
5. fill rest a little slowly to help ensure "NO" sandstorm!

*You will not even have cloudy water if sand was rinsed prior to placement in tank

why not just rinse the sand a couple time before adding it to the tank? That will create no sandstorm, or minimal one at least also.

thats tougher to doand takes longer than the bags and plates.....so why bother, plus you won't get any storm this way.

*you have to rinse the sand anyway....but if you just pour water over it ...you WILL get a sandstorm

Just curious why the sandstorm is such a big deal, you typically can not do anything with the tank when you first fill it anyways aside from placing your aquascape, ie: LR....

i don't think most people want sandstorms.....especially if they have their live rock in there and don't want it covered. Also its never fun to see your new tank look like a milkshake....

i put my sand in, poured water over the sand standing as high above the tank as possible, and to be sure it was extra stormy, i stirred it up and pointed some powerheads at the bottom to keep it stormy for a while. haha really though what difference does it make?

if you are transferring a existing tank over....you obviously don't want a sandstorm all over with your fish and corals, right?
so, this is not so much for a brand new tank but mmore for transferring.

*not to mention....anything with a motor, does not like having sand run through it ;)
