Sanjay mix making skimmer go nuts

Paulca916

Retired Reefer ;-)
I recently made my first batch of Sanjay mix.
I notice after feeding my skimmer goes nuts and makes excess foam .
Anyone that uses it have this problem ?

My friend made 8 or so sandwich bag of sanjay mix and
one of bag i got... small portion of that bag's food
made my skimmer go hay wire... I don't know what is/are
in the Sanjay's mix made that but I have experienced it. maybe try
different portion of that batch?

I've tried using a smaller portion did the same thing.(aprox 4 cubes the size of a frozen cube pack)
I put the following in my mix
1 lb.-Prawns
1 lb.-Scallops
1 lb. -Squid
1 lb.-White fish (Talapia) (everyone was out of silversides)
9- Oysters
2 oz. Dried Nori
7 -cloves garlic
60 ml - Selcon
2 oz. - Warner Marine Ultimate Amino's
It made 5 - Quart size freezer bags
Not sure why it causes so much bubbles ?

not sure about this 'sanjay mix' deal here, but according to the recipe it sounds like the same concept as the blue coral method.

with the blue coral method, you feed the mixture of food at night an hour or so after the lights are off. the skimmer is left on but without a skimmer cup. this is so the ph won't drop during the night. in the morning the skimmer cup is added back to the skimmer and everything is fine and dandy!

moral of the story, take the skimmer cup off your skimmer after feeding. replace skimmer cup 8+ hours later: no overflowing problems! :)

forgive my ignorance, but can you explain the lack of a pH drop by not having the skimmer cup on? I've never heard that before...

There is a lot of dissolved protien and fine particles in these mixes so a skimmer is going to 'eat' what passes through it. When I feed a similar mix I turn off the return pump for an hour or so to bypass the filtration and skimmer. The closed loop and Korallia keep things moving around and gives time for the food to be consumed. The skimmer picks up the leftovers.

How well did you rinse the scallops and did you soak them? They are usually loaded with a type of phosphate to add weight. That could be your issue as it does make skimmers go nuts.

Hey Gresham

Phoshates in the scallops, that makes sense. Good tip.

I noticed that whenever I rinse the scallops they foam up a lot. They are also the most expensive ingredient so I've left it out of my last two batches.

I have been adding nori lately. I use the whole "leaf" kind. I soak it to hydrate it before chopping it. The hydrated leaves are VERY slimey. I think that's auger which fish is remored to be an appetite stimulant for fish. Could the nori becausing Paul's foaming.

Gresham to be honest the scallops were a bit frozen still so I soaked them then rinsed them really good because of the faomy water when soaking them.
I hope the phosphate in them is caught by my Rowa Phos ?
Thanks for the input.
Also your insite is always appeciated.
And Brian when making the mix I couldnt resist getting out the deep fryer and making Calimari and cooking some prawns in garlic and butter.
A friend of mine came by and saw what I was using for the mix and asked do I even feed myself this well ?
I thought about it and answered "I use to befor I owned a couple reef tanks"
I treat my corals way to good lol

I did the same thing with my Nori Brian.
After cutting it up and trying to put it in the processor and ending up with Nori flake all over my kitchen I decided to soak it.
I admit I missed that part of your demostration I need to pay attention better.

Hey Chad

That's what happens to mine to. When I add Sanjay mix...
The foam in my skimmer collapses for about 10 minutes
Then it start producing really large (1-2") bubbles and flow out rapidly for about 10 minutes
Then the bubbles return to normal size but much more than usual comes out for about 30 minutes.

Someone should come up with a dual receipe...

Two lbs scallops, half for the fish, half for the family
Two lbs shrimp, half for he fish, half for the family
Two lbs of squid, half for the fish, half for the family
One lb of silversides, all for the fish

Shell the shrimp
Husk the squid

+1 Seafood is problly my favorite food.
I perfer to marinate the prawns shell on in "Berstiens Italian Dressing Marinade" over night then put them on bambo skewers and BBQ till pink
Throw in your favorite Steak some veggies and it's dinner time.
Can't forget the fresh sour dough bread with butter or even better home made garlic bread.

You'll notice I disappeared after my last post on this thread. Got hungry, had to have some seafood, Salmon stuffed with crab, not Krab, meat from Trader Joe's, yummy!
