Saw the most expensive fish in a local aquarium this week. Any guesses?

$700. Yes, $700. I thought they were on some stellar stuff to be asking that much for a fish but I guess it's so rare that many people have made the drive to thier store just to look at it. It was a eschmeyer scorpion fish. Looked like a pink scorpionfish.

We had a $750 fish at the store I work at a few weeks ago. No one bought it, so it went in the display. Then it died.

While not a marine specimen, I stumbled across a lower-priced version of this particular type of fish up for auction out of Thailand, air fare to the West Coast included, for opening bids of $10,000.00. This one is fetching a bit more, however.

$700 is not that bad. Highest I have seen myself was a Hawain Dragon Eel for $2000.

There are many reports of arowona going for over 250k. Go to the arowona boards. By the way, the ones outside of central america are illegal to keep. It is illegal to even inquire about them.

I dunno about that price for Arwana. They all look the same to me. And the Arwana in my LFS is $55.

Junkyard, that pink scorpionfish looking thing is nice. I wonder if that is a cold water species?

Are you sure about this? Do you mean S. American species are illegal to keep? I've seen many many species from Asia for sale at local stores, some with prices upward of $50K.

That 80,000 dollar fish, in china is a status symbol. It would be like owning a classic car that you never drive.

Most people work hard for their money, I'm guessing they feel they can buy what makes them happy.

It is not illegal to keep an arowana outside of Central America however you have to request one then they make sure that you have enoough knowledge and a good enough setup and they send you one.
There were talks that the ones sent were males (or females) only to avoid breeding and competition.
An LFS owner has one that he bought for 1000 usd and now 3 years later he wouldn't sell it for 10000. It sure grew a lot and coloured up nicely.
As for espensive fish a pepermint Angel costs around 10000 and that is said to be because it lives at great deapth and it takes lots of risks to go get it not to mention the veryslow process of taking it up as it has to decompress on the way up just like a diver.... IMO I see lots of fish that cost way less and look better, also I'm sure anyone who looks at my tank( if it had a perpermint angel in) would think that the hyppo tank looks a lot better under the lights.
