scotts pet shop

i really dislike them...some of the workers are knowledgeable while others are terrible. See my thread posted on here for westchester LFS...they gave me a terrible run around and tried to screw me over. It takes a couple times to tick me off and they succeeded. i am normally a fun loving laid back guy.

On their acros topic. They recently (within 3-4 weeks) set up a bunch of new halides for keeping corals...however that being said i would go in and monitor the progress of the livestock and notice coral detiorating quite regularly, maybe with these new set ups they will be better. Although i dont think it was a light issue more than i think it was a filtration/flow issue.

also i think they are fairly pricey...

I dont want to influence your thinking. i suggest you check it out yourself and see what you think...especially since i am angry with them. they could have the best coral in the world for 1/2 the price and i dont think i would go there...priciple and all that.

Scott's will NEVER answer the phone. They are persona non gratain my book. The "Dude" that runs the saltwater fish area is really scary and when I asked about fish the other employees were literally scared of him because it's "his" department. I wasn't to thrilled one day I was in there and saw how he treated the livestock, a box at UPS would get more respect.

If you are looking for real supplies and livestock there are many more stores in this area that really care.

i do agree on the flow issue on the new tanks at scotts but spending 99 dollars for an acro that is as large as a football is not to bad.the last time i was in the store they said they were going to put tunzes on those tanks. the scarry dude who use to run the saltwater section got fired!

I liked him what happen?
He scared my son though.

Bout time they cleaned house over there. Hopefully it will be a LFS worth going to in the near future.

Here is my thought: Scott's Pet Shop is not a salt water specailty store, they are a pet shop. They sell fresh water fish, rabbits, lizards, birds, snakes, chickens...well maybe not chickens. You can't go in there and expect them to answer all your saltwater questions like you would at sea schorr, oceans floor, sharkys or any other place that only deals in saltwater. There prices are very reasonable but I do agree that their corals aren't very healthy if they stay in their tanks for too long. Most of their stuff disappears within the 1st few days they get them in. I don't understand why so many people have such a huge beef with the phone situation. They are always busy, if everyone on this forum decides to stop visiting Scotts they won't dent their business. I have called a couple times and they have picked up so I think they are trying but it's not like the employees are standing around watching the phone ring and laughing. Are their better places for saltwater? Yeah like a dozen, but I will still stop in every once in a while.

and that is what we are critiqueing, their value as a saltwater store. i dont think you can use the fact that they are busy and specialize in many other things to validate the fact that their corals are, as you admit, not very healthy. poor line of reasoning...but i will take your advice, i wont go there. If i want a lizard maybe, but their fish/coral are subpar and not worth the headaches for the 3$ less it would cost.

and if the scary guy was the heavy set guy with the big grey/brown beard, he was the only one i liked at that place...he was nice, personable, and tried to help. Even if he didnt really know what he was talking about he still tried to help. if he is gone i know i wont go back i there.

My point is that you can't critique them as a saltwater store, they are a pet shop. If you go to Jewel for meat you will get decent meat, if you go to a butcher you will get better meat. The heacy set guy we are talking about, is it the guy that looks like a Jerry Garcia fan?

you can critique the meat you just cant complain when you knew that the meat wasnt as good but you went there anyway.

jerry garcia, great description. But i really did like that guy. Sounds more knowledgable in the lizzard/cute furry creatures than the fish though. But nice guys. Told me his favoite things to catch in the fish dept. was the live rick "just the right speed"
haha

I don't really get why people bash Scott's so often either. I think it's a pretty good pet shop. There's a lot of really bad pet shops around. Maybe it's not the greatest marine shop but it's not bad either. They now have 5 tanks with coral so there's been lots of new stuff to see lately. It's at least a 30 minute drive to another store with coral and 45 minutes to one that's a step above Scott's. Therefore, I will keep looking at Scott's. The fish I bought there have done well and the couple of corals I bought turned out nicely as well.
