I am trying to get my saltwater specific gravity up in my mixing container and i ran out of salt...i have an old bag in the garage but i am unsure whether or not its still good to use...if i had to guess, i've probably had the bag for a year and yes it was open...

let me know if you need any information to determine if its good or not...

I would take this to the "Reef Chemistry" threads. I am not sure if salt can adsorb CO or other nasties that could be in your garage.

Typically if the sand is not "Clumped" it is ok. The fact that the bag was open is the only issue.
If you are in a hurry, just go buy new salt and forget about it. *(better safe than sorry?)

I don't know.... I used salt out of an older container i had that seemed ok...no clumps or anything. It mixed up ok, but the specific gravity wouldn't measure correctly. It was ok on my hydrometer, but when it was tested by the lfs, it was really high. I tested my hydrometer on other water, and it was fine. It was something with the salt. I'd just go buy new salt!
