Showing off true black T. maxima

Pineapple House

I was lucky enough to come across a true black T. maxima this morning while browsing through a local wholesaler. Most of the "Black" T. maximas which I've come across are deep brown, although very few are truly black. I quickly purchased it and it's currently been in my aquarium for two hours now.

Graham,

Congrats on the promotion!! :)

I think I am almost ready for you to hand pick some stuff for me. Are you going to MACNA?

clown2be, nissin93, Jeremy B., & Peabody,
Thanks for the comments!

Pierce,
Thank you. I would be glad to hand pick some livestock for you. Unfortunately, I probably won't be heading down for MACNA. Will you be in LA anytime soon? On a side note, I've been looking around for some of the corals which you originally had in your tank. I just picked up a nice chunk of the green Acropora spp. which was taking over your tank today, as well as a small piece of the A. micropthalma which was also growing in your tank.

MiNdErAsR,
Thanks! There were a few black with blue stripes T. maxima down at SDC, although I'm still waiting for one to really catch my eye.

can i ask what that thing set you back
If I'm correct, only $20 or $30.00. Remember that this is all wholesale, and they charge by the size of the clam.

Most "black" Max's really are not black, but deep deep brown or purple. They appear black when looking in from the sides, and some even do from the top under certain lighting. However, once you see a "TRUE" black Max, it looks nothing like the deep brown/purple ones, very rare for sure!

Jeremy,
Check out Tonga clams, ya can find quite a few Black ones.
I wont say they are common, but I would'nt call them rare or very rare.
Ya cant buy a very rare clam for about 50-60 bucks.

Vili,

I bring in Tonga clams somewhat frequently (yes, the ones that are sold as "black maxima's"). When they arrive they are always deep deep brown. If you have seen a true black Max before there is absolutely no mistaking it. They are black as black can be. The Tonga ones are pretty nice, however 99% of the ones I have seen are not black.

wow that is beautiful!!!! now i gotta upgrade the lighting on my 90! just gotta wait till i hafta replace the bulbs, and just tell my parents the fixture "broke" and i need MH for my tank to survive lol, keep us updated as it grows!
