silica playsand under aragonite

hey everyone i wanted to know if there would be any negative affecvts of putting like a half an inch to an inch of aragonite reef sand over some silica playsand i already have in my 125 gallon FOWLR. the reason i want to do this is because the fish always stir up the silica thanks

No problems really, but the arogonite is less dense, so unless you use a fairly large particle size they will blow that around even more. You would need to add it slowly so as not to suffocate any of your sandbed critters.

That's the problem I have with my silica sand sandbed. I don't have any of the issues that most people fear with silica like algae or anything like that but I have a continious silica sand storm in my tank.

I would recommend that you start pouring a cup or so a week/every couple of days over the silica in sections of the tank. You don't want to cover up your entire sandbed in one shot. Go slowly and you shouldn't have any problems.

Good luck.

I'm pretty good at digging up the old threads!

I have the same problem. I'm thinking of doing this myself. Unfortunately, I have 300+ LBs of silica sand in my tank, so I'd like to remove a little of it. How's that best done? Little at a time from a section?

Also, as my sand bed slowly shifts (if currents move) will the larger arogonite get buried and defeat the whole "holding it down" idea?

Thx
Jason
