Silverslides

I live in New Jersey and in the river down the street there are little fish that look just like silverslides, everybody calls them shiners, I think silverslides are just another name for them. Can I feed my mantis them? and how mutch? there are millions of them

From what I've been told, and from what I've seen at zoos, freshwater fish aren't an ideal source of nutrients due to a large amount of fatty acids that can't be used/digested by saltwater species.

This tends to build up in the system and can potentially kill a fish.

Whether or not this applies to inverts is another story, but I tend to avoid using freshwater to feed saltwater.

I thought silverslides where saltwater?? Because most people with lionfish, groupers, mantis, octos feed them silverslides.

Silversides are a saltwater baitfish. What you are seeing in the river are probably shiners, a freshwater baitfish.

I dont understand, you said they are a freshwater baitfish and are in the river. My river and most rivers is saltwater. I thought only lakes where freshwater. I'm almost 100% shure my river is saltwater.

When I spoke of freshwater fish, I meant freshwater fish in general (typically guppies and rosy red feeders).

Silversides sold by aquarium companies usually are 100% marine. Around here, the rivers and streams are 100% fresh. We see a lot of shiners and other members of the carp family.

Around the coasts, a lot of rivers do take on a bit of salt, thoug I wouldn't go so far as to say that they're 100% salt. I'm sure they're quite salty by the estuaries. :p

Whether or not the ones you're seeing are marine or not is up to you. I can't say one way or another. But I will say agani that feeding freshwater fish to saltwater specimens probably isn't the best thing to do.

??? I think you're mistaken. I think most rivers are sweetwater.
