Sinularia relocation

What is the best way to relocate my sinularia? I have 4 colonies on a large piece of live rock and I would like to relocate them to another area in the tank. They are in a spot that I could better utilize for something else. The rock they are on is simply to big to just move and it would greatly disrupt the rock work to move it. Could I just cut off a small piece of the rock they are attached to, without cutting in to the colony, and move each one like that?

Depending on the type of rock, you may be able to use bone cutters to cut away the rock around the base. That would be the best option since you can't remove the rock. I'd try this first.

Another option is to cut the corals off the rock. That leaves behind a stump that will grow more colonies, though. Will pollute the water to some degree, as well. If you do this, run fresh carbon and do a water change shortly afterward.

Third option (least favorite, though I've done it many times) it to tear the colonies off the rock. Don't really recommend this unless no other options work. This will stress the corals and likely release at least if not more nasties into the water. Definitely run carbon and expect water changes.

If you can get the rock out, a hammer and screwdriver or other chisel like object will knock the colonies off (whack around the base of the coral on the rock).

I would cut it right off and relocate it. Add some fresh carbon after you do it just to make sure there are no major issues in the tank.
