Size of Maxijets

I'm looking at adding a second powerhead to my tank as I've been recommended to for increased flow for corals. I'm looking at a MJ1200 or MJ900. How big are they? I don't like big, bulky powerheads...it's a 29 gallon tank and I want to see my fish/corals/critters and not just two powerheads. I am planning on putting on one of those Hydor FLO Rotating Deflectors on whatever I get and I've heard they do decrease the flow somewhat. Thanks for info/opinions!!!

If there's a size difference between the 900 and 600, I can't tell, because I had to scrape the coralline off to figure out which was which. Never had a 1200, so I couldn't speak for that.

I think they are all about the same size. I have em in 900 and 1200 and I really can't tell the diff. Also, compared to other PH, I think the maxi are a bit smaller. If you have a heat issue, I would go with the 900 as it uses less energy and still has very good GPH.

Just to give you an idea, here is what two MJ 400s look like in a 29gal.

I have a 29g SPS tank. The 600, 900, and 1200 are all the same size. I have 2 of the 1200's in my tank. I am considering adding another. Definitely don't by the 600...weak. Put 2 maxi-jet 1200's in your tank. You need to have 2 powerheads in your tank any way. If they are all the same size why not buy the one that circulates the most gph. By the way my sand doesn't blow around at all. I have never met a person who wished they had less water flow. I almost forgot to mention, I have a 3rd maxi-jet 1200 on my hang on back skimmer. I have 30x flow and wish I had more.

There's one good reason to choose the 900 over the 1200... Power consumption. If you care about that sort of thing, the 1200 is rated at 20w, the 900 only 8.5.

Amen Reverend. I was goin got mention the power consumtion. Also that power is heat added to the tank. A 1200 will add more heat then a 900.

Not at all... the 900 draws 8.5w and puts out 230GPH while the 1200 draws 20w for only 295GPH. I went with a 900 for my AquaPod and it moved the hydro flo with more than enough power.

I've got two 900's in my 30 long. This along with a small power filter and a protein skimmer provides enough flow. I did put a 400 in for a while to see how it would do, but it was just too much.

the size you get also depends on what coral you have. My 37 is the same footprint as your 29, it's just a little taller. I have all LPS and softies and when I started the tank up, 2 1200's felt like they were going to rip the coral off of the rock because they were so strong. Just something to keep in mind...

This is a funny thread. Everyone keeps saying things like what size and my 30 long etc. What gives.

I am running 4 1200's on a wavemaker ( there are usually 3 of them on at a time and the tank is a allglass 38) and a mag 9 for a return from my sump in a mixed reef. I keep the 1200's circulating towards the top of the tank to provide flow for my SPS.

As far as I can tell the maxijets all have the same footprint.
