My skimmmer is collection more water in the "junk cup" than it is collecting junk....is that normal? i have a remora aqua-c powered by a maxi-jet 1200. has anyone had this problem? is it normal? thanx in advance guys!

Hello,
It sounds like you have too much water flow going into the skimmer you need to find a way to reduce the flow.

Your collection cup is probably to low. Move the "band" that holds the cup up higher so the cup sits higher. Keep adjusting it slowly until you can find a "sweet" spot.

I could never get mine to work perfect. It took a lot tweaking. It seemed to run better running a wet skim rather than a dry.

I hope it works out for you.

Remoras are abit over hyped for what it does. I bought one for my old setup and was all excited after hearing all this "good" stuff about them. It was only a okay skimmer at best for me. Never really produced nasty skimmate.

I well to Deltec :)

haha; that's funny; a three year old thread.

I just switched my remora from MJ1200 to Mag 3, and I had to move the cup to the highest position to avoid overflowing it in the first five minutes.

I have yet to see a Remora produce anything thicker than a "green tea" skimmate. Smells terrible, but I have yet to see anything even approaching the thick sludge I often see in pictures of collection cups from high-end skimmers.

I can't seem to get the thick sludge from my ER-RS-100, although I only have 2 fish in a 90 and it's only been up 3 months.

Regards,

Pat

3 years, that is funny. How big is the hard drive on the RC server anway?

Actually my Remora does pull out the thick stuff from time to time, but it's very finniky. The pump has to be super clean, the injector has to be clean, the collector has to be clean. That's why I switched to Mag 3 -- to try to make it more consistent.

Yeah, it's a bit early; I've only had the Mag 3 on there for 24 hours. I am really impressed by the amount of foam generated though. At nearly the highest position, it filled a half a collection cup in that period. The skimmate isn't very dark, but it isn't clear either, so I am happy so far.

I used to be a firm believer of Aqua-C skimmers and they all performed quite well, but not compared to what I have now. Here's my progression of changes... wished I knew about the German made skimmers a long time ago.

Tank #1, originally 240g FOWLR ===> 175g FOWLR
EuroReef >> AquaC EV >> ASM >> H&S A200-1260

Tank #2, 60g Reef
AquaC Remora >> Remora Pro >> Deltec AP600

Tank #3, 75g Reef
AquaC Remora Pro >> Rem Pro w/Mag5 >> Deltec APF600

I would have saved a lot of money if I discovered the efficient German skimmers up front and was willing to spend the money for them. The are extremely quiet, energy efficient, put very little heat back into the water and draws more air. Being that all 3 models I have now are recirculating skimmers, there's more contact time and much better foaming. I like to skim wet and this is the what I get on my 60g and need to clean every 2 days. I used to get this after about 7-10 days when I was using the AquaC Remora Pro.

Wow, that looks nasty! I do have to wonder though. All the round skimmers I've seen in person have very small collecion cups -- ok they look large on the outside, but they have the input tube inisde that takes up most of the volume. The Remora has a small intake tube in a large square collection cup. I wonder if that size difference contributes to the percieved performance difference. True/false?

My remora works great for my 30g. I get a pretty dark "coffee" every week. Not a full cup, but maybe a half cup. I would just raise your collection cup up and let it sit.
