Skimmer goes crazy after filter pad change...

I have an Aqua C 240 with a mag 18 doing my skimming on a 180 gal tank. I change a sheet of polyester filter pad and the floss weekly but right after I change the material the skimmer goes nuts taking out as much as 2 to 3 gallons of wet skimmate.

Does this sound right and does this happen to anybody else

Sometimes there are leftover chemical residues on the pads from maufacturing, and they can make the skimmer go nuts. Also I noticed at least with my HOB filter when I change the pads it releases a bunch of dietrius, and junk into the water that could also make the skimmer start working overtime.

Only other thing I can think of...when you change the filter, does the water level around the skimmer change?
