Skimmer Help/Reccomendation, Please

In one of my other tanks I've been running a Coralife Super Skimmer(125G Version) This thing is a P.O.S.!! It either overflows the cup with clear water, not really skimming at all, or the bubbles don't go over the riser cup. I have tried many different things, contacted the company, all to my same conclusion, this thing stinks. I have a pretty good idea of how a skimmer is supposed to work, I have a Deltec on my 75G, but I didn't want to spend that kind of money on this tank.

So, I have decided I will have to buy another skimmer, can someone please help me decide on a good choice this time. I have a 55G LPS/SPS(trying-not succeeding) with a 20G Sump.

Anyone feel free to chime in on what they use, or even what they wouldn't use, I don't want to have to do this again.

Thanks,
Dave

i have been having the same issues with my e.t.s.s "super" reef devil skimmer on my 72. I m ready to heave it out my window. I understand your frustartion. I have been researching and i cant speak from experience but it has all lead me to ASM skimmers G1X or G2. You can find them for about 190-240. PM me if you want links. Do you want to buy a reef devil lol. i will give you a great deal

panduriniii: thanks for the reply, i've been looking into the ASM as well, problem is footprint is a little bigger than I am looking for.

rutz81,
I am going through the same problem now. I have a RedSea Berlin skimmer and will be upgrading soon. I attempted about 6 months to a year ago to look for a new skimmer, got frustrated and stop looking. It just came down to dropping money on a good skimmer and not having to worry. I believe I have it down to an h&s skimmer just not sure which model. look in the h&s/finsreef forum. My other choices were deltec or myreefcreations. I do not want to start a skimmer war on which of these are better. I feel the skimmer purchase is the hardest decision to make on a tank and can't wait until my decision is made.

wombat: I completely agree that a good skimmer is pretty much one of the most imprtant things to a successful tank, I have proof of it everyday. My 75G SPS is doing very well(knock on wood), and the 55 is not. ONE major difference is quality of skimmer. I was actually looking at the smallest H&S in sump model, any opinions on it?

I'm running a aquaclear 250 on my 55 with a 1700 rio pump cause i bought it from a salvage store and it didn't have a pump. Only addition i made was a gate valve on the output and I'm getting good skimmate. its got a pretty small footprint including the pump.

I use an Urchin, and the thing has two maintenance chores: empty the skimmate (which is good and thorough) and twice a year take out a little screw under the collection box and brush it out. It's in-sump with a tiny footprint. Mine is in a 52 gallon, and would run a 75 or so, and has a footprint only about that of a 3x5 card. Of all things I have to fuss with, the skimmer is never it.

I dig my ASM G3:

Just got an ASM G3 and it is working great as well. I cleaned out the cup Sunday and it looks like anemonebuffs pictures as of this afternoon. Everyone I know who owns one loves it.

I replaced my CSS 125 with a Turboflotor 1000 Multi, I really didnt like the CSS, it would overflow for no apparent reason whenever it felt like it, and there were a TON of micro bubbles in the tank.

Shows what I know I wasn't even aware Tunze made skimmers :) Either way I like my Turboflotor, has been behaving perfectly for a month now, and does a good job.

My ASM is my third skimmer and it blows everything else away that I've ever had. I started with Aqua Medic and it never skimmed anything. I then moved to the EV-1... Which really wasn't much better. I LOVE MY ASM!!!

It is set it and forget it bigtime. I clean it once a week and it skims away.

Don't waste your $$$ on others.

Just my .02

Robert
