Skimmer Suggestions for BB SPS Reef?

Going to be setting up a custom 26g BB, SPS only tank in a few months. Total system volume will probebly be in the 50g range.

I need a little help with choosing an appropriate skimmer though. Probebly willing to spend up to about $400 and i have a few models that i've been looking at so far. Honostly though, i have no experience what so ever with BB tanks and skimmers in this catagory so i dont know what would be overdoing it or what would be too little.

Skimmers i'm considering:

-H and S 110-F2000 in sump --> Needle wheel

-Barr Aquatics SK1020 --> Becket Style, I already have a Panworld 50PX to run it.

-MRC MR1 --> Becket Style, Panworld 50PX

-ASM G-2 --> Needle Wheel

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Well, for BB SPS, the more skimming the better.

With that in mind, if you are looking at an ASM G-2, then you HAVE to jump to the ASM G-3, which for only $10-20 more gets you a much stronger pump.

Then, if you're looking at an ASM G-3, but also considering MRC, you will find some owners (one in particular comes to mind) who have had both skimmers, and STRONGLY prefer the MRC-2 over the ASM G-3. I do not know if a MRC-2 is outside your price range, as you had listed the MRC-1 instead.

If you do decide to go with the ASM, check out some of the very useful modifications available for them at www.asmskimmer.com

MR2 would still be in my price range, i also like the fact that they are upgradable.

The barr aquatics skimmers are very appealling though although i dont know if they are worth the extra price.

No Deltec?

Those you listed are all good skimmers except one. Substitute Euroreef for the ASM. Quality :thumbsup: Buy once, buy right.

Its more of a price range issue with the euro reefs and the deltec. For the euro reefs, the only realistic option is $240 for the cs80, the rest all start above 400 which is out of my price range. I would rather get an asm which i could mod to be recirculating reletively easily than the more expensive Euro Reefs.

As for deltec, too far out of my price range as well.

And if your paying the Euro Reef prices might as well go to a Deltec.

Buy once, buy right. Sounds good. But you dont want to buy once and over pay.

IMO. I would go with the MR1 for a 29g tank. I think your Panworld pump may be a bit large for your setup. You should match your skimmer throughput gph to your sump throughput gph. How much will your overflow(s) handle?

Good point on the ASM... I don't understand people who insist on buying an identical [for all intents and purposes] Euroreef at almost twice the price :rolleyes:

I used a G-3 when I was BB [appx 65g total volume] and I think it worked satisfactorily. I really think I would have been better served with the higher GPH and power you get with a beckett though... if I had it to do again, that's the choice I'd make. hth :)
