My skimmer is really annoying the life out of me! Last month, when i bought my set up, i purchased a used aqua C skimmer. It came with a rio 800. it does the job, but it is much too loud....at night when im trying to sleep, all i can hear is that low humming/ vibrating noise! At first i learned to deal with it, but now it is driving me insane! I need some advice, as I am sure that I am not the only one who has had this problem....or am i? Today, to try to fix the problem......instead of directly plugging the hole of the rio into the skimmer, i used the rio attachment and added a flexible tubing in between the two openings thinking that it would act as a silencer.....its still vibrates! WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY SKIMMER?!! PLEASE HELP ME!! Im sick of this insomnia!

I have the Remora Pro with a mag350 on it and all I hear is the water foaming up it's almost soothing.. lol.. I ordered the skimmer from www.premiumaquatics.com Jason I believe, well anyway it came with a cracked collection cup, I made a phone call and had a new one in 2 days.. and upgraded to the mag pump.. Highly reccomend it.. I would also highly reccomened premium aquatics they are the best ..

I was thinking about the surface filter box for this skimmer know anything about it?

i also am using a remora in my nano tank. i am also using the skimmer box. it's not very user friendly and is quite bulky. you have to be able to keep your water level at a constant or you will be adjusting the box frequently. i am thinking about trying a different surface skimmer that is self adjusting. i believe that it is made by a company called "Tom". i have to find out how much this other surface skimmer will flow as i am using the mj upgrade. the tom is very compact and more tube shaped so it will fit in a corner easily.

I had the Remora with the Rio 800 and it too drove me absolutely insane with the buzzing so I feel your pain. I added the plastic tube part which helped some, then tilted the pump outwards (towards the middle of the tank) which helped a lot (kept it away from the back glass where it vibrates). I finally gave up and got the MaxiJet 1200 which makes absolutely no humming at all! I also have the box for the skimmer and, although it is a little user unfriendly, it sure beats looking at an ugly pump. Even though I am a member of the I-hate-Rios club, I just got the 2500HP for my sump on my new 58 gallon and am very pleased with it. Can I have an exception to the rule  If you are willing to keep the Rio 800, I have the preskimmer box for it if you want to buy it. See http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=176076.

I'm going to buy a remora pro today or tomorrow. I got a question.. It comes with either a RIO 1200 or a MAG3. The MAG 3 is a little more expensive. WHich would you recommend I go with? If not the RIO, why?? Does it just make noise or does it have conductivity problems like getting to hot or electrical shock? Any input would be great.

MAg...

MAg...

Well, the rio 1200 will not be as loud because the impeller is different than the rio 800...i think. Anyhow, anything is better than a rio. Rio is not very well crafted. That explains why i is soooo friggin cheap!

Rios don't have the best reputation, they have been balmed for numerous tank crashes when they failed and leached chemicals into the tank killing everything. They are also reported to be noisy, fail to restart, require frequent cleaning to keep them working, etc. IMO go with the Mag, I have 3 of them that I have been using for quite awhile and have had no problems with them and think that they are definately worth the few extra dollars for their reliability and peace of mind. It took me exactly 3 months in this hobby to realize how bad rio pumps are. That was a shock; literally!

I would consider it a personal victory if every reef keeper sent their lousy rio pumps back to the manufacturer. Let them get electrocuted..
