skimmerless lps displays

I did for a while with no fish though and a refugium. But is more of a hassle without a skimmer. There is however some new bacteria on the market that is being teseted on some reef tanks without a skimmer. Is called the right now bacteria, do a search on RC there was a big discussion about it not too long ago. .

yes, but if you have fish then you are talking about a big messy tank with all the waste and ammonia they will produce.

My 29 gallon is skimmerless and I have 4 fish. My live rock is very high quality with lots of seaweed and other stuff. I do a water change once a month and have a Cascade 700 canister filter. Everything is going smoothly! Here is what is looks like:

We are skimmerless. The 92 bow has a refugium and the 90 straight has only itself to rely on. The straight 90 - the lps dominated tank seem to be very happy and the handful of sps haven't uttered a complaint. There are only three fish, two percs and a benny the blenny and a small cleanup crew, if you can call them a crew, an emerald, some snails and a mated pair of boxer shrimp. Humph to the clean up crew that prefers to eat anything but the leftovers.

The 40 gal refugium was an add on to the bow to house a cholate chip star fish that was homeless. It is just beautiful, a show tank in its own right, a step away into the grasslands, lush and crystal clear. No skimmer there.

The nano (5 gal) wanna be seems pleased with a perc a rock and a tidbit of this and that.

The 20 gal trash tank, just a tank to let things sit and wonder where they will wind up .....filterless, to say the least, exists with zip on filteration, let alone a skimmer.

When I get back to the home turf I will certainly take a few pics of all to reveal how well things are without the highly praised skimmers. It seems odd that we would want to remove phyto only to add it back in later from an lfs.

Now with that said, what works for one does not necessarily work for another.

Also, nice shot of the tank!

how is this possible? Show me that way! lots of water change?:D

Very nice display dennis. Could you give me the sand depth/grain size on your system? Has it been consistent for the entire 6 years?

Here is my 42 hex, I had a Aqua C remora on it for a few months then I just took it off for lack of performance. All I use for filteration is carbon and HOB fuge, no sump, 3 MJ 1200's. I just reaquascaped it a couple days ago and I'm still not done so excuse the mess. As livestock goes I have a Mandarin Goby who is 1 year old, a 6 months green clown goby. I did just trade away a tiny Blue Hep Tang. Tank is 14 months old.
