SKimz Pump slow down

SKimz Pump slow down

Hi All,
here with the hope that someone with a similar issue may have some input. I have a Skimz Leopard SL183. I've never thought of this skimmer as an agressive skimmer (not much foam, turbulance) but lately I noticed considerable detritus in the display tank and started evaluating each piece of equipment. The fault came to the skimmer. It's slown down. Before you jump in. YES I took all apart and soaked in vinegar and tap. The impellar holes are all clear and I q-tipped all reachable parts. Reassembled and no improvement. Water level is not rising enough to have foam enter cup. If I close the valve door off the water rises but pump cavitates and shuts off for a second and restarts. I ran it in a tupperware with vinegar and water as I've done in the past. Note that in the past the water would push up and I'd remove the skimmer cup drain cap and let the collected water fall back into tupperware. Not even close to happening at this point. Any ideas? New pump? Impeller? Have a garage sale? Any better pumps that would fit ?

It for sure sounds like a impeller or pump issue. How old is the skimmer and what pump does it have..

its less than two years old.

I believe that is a re branded jebao pump... You could call BRS and as them there opinion . A bad impeller does not always show signs of wear . it could be a weak magnet..Also that being a DC PUMP It could be a Controller issue..

Again i would try to get brs to help you troubleshoot what is going wrong. There are Newer versions of those pumps as well as other brands.. any External needle wheel pump that produces the same volume should work to replace that

My Skimz skimmer had a eden ac pump

this is about i really know of to offer you.. GOOD Luck

I have been running the same skimmer for the past couple years and had the same problem i think you are having about 4 months ago . One day after feeding skimmer restarted started to rise but as soon as it make it up to the cup it would shut down all lights on controler would turn off water level drop and then back on and repeat itself. I tried all speeds and same thing. I switched the controller as i had a spare same problem and almost ordered a pump .something told me to try a different power supply and to my suprise i plugged it into my jebao cp40's power supply and it started fine no more problems so i ordered a new power supply off bulk reef supply and had everything back to normal within a few days.

Just got a Skimz Oval SV203 and installed it yesterday. First impressions super quiet! The adjustments are very precise I really like that. Obviously it's not broken in yet but I was hoping for more bubbles in the chamber they only fill the upper half so I guess we'll see. I'm replacing an SWC 180 cone skimmer mainly because I wanted something quieter and just itching for some new equipment. I'm a little disappointed in the collection cup size it's smaller than my other skimmer the SWC but they are rated for the same tank size. My SWC would fill the complete chamber with bubbles so I feel like it would have better dwell time for skimming but only time will tell which one performs better.

Lol I hope I get the same reliability. If something, I'm sure I'll be taken care of by BRS.

I bought mine before Brs started selling them so I never had a warranty through them but it's nice to see the sell the in case I need parts later if something was to go wrong.

That's exactly the reason I decided to give skimz a try this round. It's replacing an aquamaxx em200.
