Smasher habitat

I just got a 5" peacock smasher and I'm debating on putting him in minibow 7gal. or 20gal. hex grow out tank. The tank would be purely run by a refugium and possibly a 70 or 150w HQI. My main problem is constructing the proper habitat. Can someone please post pics of the wild habitat for these guys, or your own captive territory, thanks! :hammer:

Here's a shot of the rock and sand.. I'll take a picture of the tank tomorrow night. I'm not sure if I set up the 'proper' Mantis Tank, but Roy (my Mantis) seems VERY happy! He loves to play in the branchy coral.

You probably would not want your tank to look like a typical O. s. habitat. Think of a sandy, rubble plain at 60 feet. The animal lives in a u-shaped burrow about two feet long. The entrances are lined with small pieces of rubble and shell.. It is not colorful, it is not pretty!

Gono (or anyone) what setup do you think would best suit the Mantis? What substrate, and what layout?

cheers.

If you want to mimic field conditions, you will need a mix of sand, gravel and coral rubble and shell with pieces ranging in size from pea to golfball. One or two large pieces of LR on top of this will focus the animal's digging. If the consistancy of the substrate is right, it should be able to build a burrow. However, this doesn't always work, so it is probably easier to use a length of grey or black PVC about 2 inches in diameter. Sometimes if you bury the tube with rubble, the animal wiill exten the burrow and it will look natural. A tricky part with this is whether you want to go the plenum route or rely on the life rock and skimming, etc. I usually don't construct a plenum, but rather pile up the sand, gravel and rubble on one end of the tank leaving most of the bottom with only a thin covering..
