snails vs hermits

My hermits are slowly killing all me snails.I was pondering removing the hermits and going with all snails.
What are the pros and cons of doing this?
Thanks

Scarlets don't bother the snails, at least in my experience. Get a conch---no small hermit can handle one of those. Get nassarius snails: hermits can't find them to harm them and their shells are too small to tempt the hermits.
Get a lot of extra shells for your hermits: snail-killing usually means they're desperate.

Tell that to my blue leg hermits sporting new $1.29 nassarius shells-- not sure if the snails died and the shells were "found" or the hermits killed them. I do have a shell shortage in my tank.

Anybody have a good inexpensive source for extra hermit shells for blue leg and scarlet hermits????

why are you spending 1.29 for a nassarius snail? you can get them on ebay for 20$ for 200.

Those aren't Nassarius Snails-- they are mud snails-- people call them Nassarius Obsoleta, they are actally called Ilyanassa Obsoleta (http://www.exoticsguide.org/species_pages/i_obsoleta.html) and are from temperate water and have predatory tendencies for sand dwelling micro fauna-- yes people do use them in their tanks... I don't...

I pay 1.29 for Nassarius Vibex at a LFS

I recieved my Rock from TBS and it has a bunch of snails in it. There website says these snails are bad and predators. How can you tell the good from the bad.

I'm far for an expert (just good at googling), just read through a long debate (heated) on here that got locked a while back--- some claimed them to be bad, others not-- the conservative route is to get the vibex-- the vibex I have purchased look just like the pic above-- light colored shell with ridges-- the obsoleta are darker with smoother shells---

I wouldn't sweat them too much unless you keep an ungodly number-- if they are predatory, it would probably take alot to hurt your sand critter population.

How did I miss that Dwayne?? (and you are sure you got vibex??) unfortunately for me to come down to findlay would negate my cost savings for the lower price--

Yes we got the vibex. We only offered it to the Findlay people because it would have been hard to distribute if everyone joined in.

I keep both and replace the snails as needed. For the most part though, my crabs leave the snails alone if I keep plenty of extra shells.

I have at least one blue leg hermit in an astrea shell, and one in an obsolleta shell (which I formerly thought was a nassarius shell until I read this thread). I don't know if the crabs killed them or the snails died from something else. I do have a shell shortage, so I think it's likely the crabs may kill some snails.

I had a nassarius snail that wasn't doing too good from day 1. And, last night I thought if he doesn't look better in the morning, I'll get rid of him. I don't want him to die in my tank. Well, when I looked this morning, he was gone and my hermit was wearing his shell.

I think he died and the hermit cleaned things up.

I was loosing snails almost one a day.
After a water change and rock remodel I smelled something.
I picked up a shell and the stench about knocked me over.
There were 3 other shells the same.
I took out all hermits and QT'd them to check.
NO MORE SNAIL DEATH!
And I had plenty of shells for them.

Ouch. Well, I am getting 2 more hermits tomorrow. I hope they will behave just like the ones I have now.

davocean, btw, is that a custom stand? It is nice.
