solenoids?

Ok guys, what solenoids are you using? I know there are ones for RODI units, but is anyone out there using them for handling salt water?? My impression is that most of them have copper or other metals in them so aren't reef safe (for contact with SW). Are there any reef safe solenoids?

Grainger has a huge selection of stainless steal soleniods from red hat.
I use one to dose kalk for top off water, works great.

SS ones are very expensive. I have a cheaper poly one. It is on the input side of my kalk reactor. I have my RO/DI system drive the reactor base on a float switch in the sump.

The solenoid is 12v, connected to the float switch. When the float drops, solenoid opens and push water into the reactor, which in turn fills the sump with Kalk.

I go a normally closed solenoid. You can get normally open ones as well.

i've been using the mcmaster solenoid valve mentioned above for my RO and on my CO2. works great. if you get it, make sure you hook it up correctly. one side is "in" and the other is "out". otherwise it doesn't seal properly.

dunno about saltwater use though.

Can you run kalk through those valves?

it would probably gunk up after a while. you could run clean makeup water to your kalk reactor flushing kalk water into your system.

But if it is before the reactor, brass fitting should be ok since metals would precipitate out, right?

you can use a pinch valve they have them nc and no. the valve never comes in contact with the product only the tubing. unsure what the psi rating is.
