I live just outside of toledo ohio (Genoa) and was wondering if anybody knows of any kind of southdown sand that is for sale in the area, buying a large amount of caribsea is just outta my price range from any of the lfs.

well thank you for the quick replys , so i might as well just bite the bullet and buy some from a lfs. Also thankyou for the welcome haha

I looked last spring for about 2 months.. no luck.. the only type of sand that might be aragonite sold near here that I could find was Old castle brand.. you have to do the vinegar test on it.

There was some old castle that passed the vinegar test sold at a walmart up in Monroe MI... by the time I got up there they were out.

I did find old castle white play sand at K-mart, Walmart, and Meijers but it all failed the test... I tried each place multiple times to see if they got some aragonite in at different times..

If you are up for a drive, check out the cleveland area reef club-- there is a garden center near cleveland that sold Southdown last year... factor in your gas expense... if you aren't getting alot then its probably cheaper to get it online.. if getting a bunch then it might be worth it.

Dwayne is that stuff in our local area

Should be in stock at Lowes. You can use just about any sand that you want to though. It does not have to be aragonite and silica will work just fine.

well thank you very much everybody for the fast and timely replies I think im going to check out lowes for that stuff it looks like it will suit my purpose thanks Dwayne.

I've looked... not since last summer, but never seen it here at Lowes, HD, or Menards... believe me I've looked...

weshu87,

Here is what I found at Home Depot last year.

It passed the vinegar test. The only thing is, you will get a pretty good diatom bloom from it. It probably has more silicates than aragonite. You may want to get a couple bags of this, if you can find it. Then just buy a bag or two of aragonite to put on top of this sand. It has worked well for me.

Buy some of that live sand from Spuds :) That is a good deal that he has.

Fred, Why do you suppose it says "Do not use for..., aquariums, ..."
That would be a concern to me...

I didn't think of it when I made that post but just for giggles I have looked at a couple HDs in the Ft Lauderdale area. They were as baffled as to what I was talking about as they are here.

hllywd,

My understanding is that all sand, besides ones specifically packaged for the hobby, have that comment on the bag including southdown sand.

I can only speak from personal experience. It has worked great for me. The sand is teaming with life (pods, worms, etc). My corals are doing well as are my fish. But, as always, use at your own risk. My experience has been a good one.

Yes Tim, you can ignore that warning when you see it on a bag of sand. It has been on every bag of southdown/oldcastle/yardright.

Today i visited lowes bought a bag of the kolorscape patio/paver base 1. vinegar tested it fizzed right up and what was left was chunks of stone which must not be argonite. This is kind of dissapointing but there were 2 other grades of kolorscape patio/paver which were more like a regular sand all packaged by old castle, i will go back soon and test those 2 as well.
