I have had my 10 gal up for three months now and have the perfect spot for a small clam. My LFS say that under my lighting (8 watts/gal) I can keep just 2 species, but def not the maxima clams. Which species can I keep? Anyone have luck keeping them under my circumstances? Let me know becuase I have a squamosa on hold (1 in) at my LFS for only 20 bucks!

Squamosa or Deresa would be the two best possibilities. I have a Deresa under 440watts VHO and its growing nicely.

That is correct, given the proper conditions they would outgrow that size tank quicky like joe said. Please keep in mind that if you do get a small clam you must be prepared to spot feed it phytoplankton.

you can also keep Hippopus, although not very colorful they require a lot less light.

Those were the 2 species that I thought... I am definately going to spot feed phytoplankton. Is there a certain brand you all reccomend? Thanks for the help!

DT's live Phytoplankton is good. Get the same bottle since it does have an expiration date. On a 10 gal it would last probably 2 months if you feed the tank 2x's / week.

I will be buying the DT's shortly. Thanks for all your help everyone! I will post pics when I get my clam.

DT's $

DT's $

I got a small bottle of DT's for $10 at LFS. Usually a bottle runs around $15. Buying it at LFS is the best way to go since it needs to be refrigerated or else it will go bad. So online places will charge next day shipping which runs aroung 7 bucks or more.
I belive some corals actually do use Phytoplankton as a food source, not only bivalves. Example is feather duster, and chili coral. I have them in my tank and all I feed is DT's 1x / wk. I had them for couple months now and they are doing fine.

The glass is dirty but you can still see him.

He came with 2 colonies of Stylophora pistillata (Cat's Paw Coral)
on his shell.
