My refrugium has a sponge in the bubble trap between center compartment and return compartment. Is it recommended to continue using the sponge or remove it completely?

Spec's:
Refrugium 26" long x 18" wide x 16" high
1st compartment is 6.25" long, tank drains into two filter socks, and has a small Maxijet submersible utility pump 1800 for skimmer feed
2nd compartment is 12.75" long, has 4.5" sandbed, 4 lbs live rock rubble, 6.5" water height, and loaded with chaeto
3rd compartment is 2.75" long has sponge in it, skimmer return and both BRS reactors dump into this compartment
4th compartment is 4.25" long, CoraLife Turbo-Sea 1090 external return pump pulls from, kalk reactor drains into, and kent float valve for RO/DI gravity feed ATO from 15 gallon tank.

Filter socks and sponge are replaced weekly, dirty filter socks are washed with bleach with second rinse option, sponge is washed without bleach, no detergent used on either of them.

Tank is an Oceanic 140 gl 48" x 24" x 30", skimmer is a ReeFlo Orca 200 with Orca Gold recirculating pump. Tank has been setup since 2005, have been using the reeflo orca 200 since 2008.
Skimmer is behind tank on wet bar, 4' above refrugium, so utility pump has 4' head, which means flow is approximately 255 into skimmer (according to documentation with pump).
Turbo-Sea 1090 has a head of approximately 5.5', so it has a return flow between 650-800 if unregulated, but I have a 1" gate valve on discharge side closed approximately 25%.

If you clean or replace them frequently, i dont see any reason why it shouldnt stay, if you dont want it there, its fine to remove them too.

I have been using a sponge in my refugium to keep the macro from flowing into the return area for many years.

I use one in mine as well.. Just gotta replace or clean it every couple weeks or as it gets dirty enough to notice/remember to clean it...
